Local vs cloud processing

This is the biggest difference. Wispr Flow’s privacy page says: “Transcription always happens in the cloud to provide the best speed and accuracy.” It also gives you controls, including a Dictation Cloud Storage setting for whether Wispr stores transcripts, audio and dictation history on its servers, and a choice about whether your data can be used to train models.

Dictation Key takes the other approach. Your audio is processed on your Mac by local speech models, Parakeet and Whisper. After you download a model once, dictation and file transcription work with no internet connection. It asks only for Microphone and Accessibility permissions, and it skips recognized password fields. Read the privacy details.

Cloud processing isn’t automatically worse. It lets Wispr Flow run large AI models that a laptop can’t, which powers its rewriting. Local processing trades that for keeping audio on your device and working offline.

Price

As of September 2026, per wisprflow.ai/pricing, Wispr Flow has four plans:

  • Free: $0, with 2,000 words per week on desktop and 1,000 per week on mobile.
  • Pro: $15 per user per month, or $12 per user per month billed annually. Unlimited dictation.
  • Growth: $23 per user per month, or $18 billed annually. Adds SSO and admin controls.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing.

Dictation Key is free, with no subscription and no weekly word cap. Dictation runs on your own Mac, so there is no per-word server cost to pass on.

Where Wispr Flow is better

  • Styled rewriting. Wispr Flow can rewrite in styles such as Formal or Casual and adapt per app. Dictation Key’s Smart cleanup tidies what you said but does not change its style, and works in English only.
  • Cross-platform. Wispr Flow runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android with syncing. Dictation Key is Mac only.
  • Language coverage. Wispr Flow lists 100+ languages.
  • Teams. Shared dictionaries, team workspaces, SSO and admin controls on paid plans.

Where Dictation Key fits

  • Private by design. Audio stays on your Mac. Useful when you dictate sensitive drafts or work offline on a plane or train.
  • Free without limits. No subscription and no weekly word count to watch.
  • Hold to talk. Hold Fn/Globe, speak, release, and the text lands in the focused app. Double-tap for hands-free, tap again to finish, Esc cancels.
  • Live transcription on Apple silicon. English and 24 European languages transcribe while you speak with Parakeet models.
  • Smart cleanup that stays on your Mac. A small AI model on your Mac fixes punctuation and follows self-corrections like “Thursday, no wait, Wednesday” (Apple silicon, English). It also removes “um” and “uh” and accidental repeats while keeping intentional emphasis like “very, very”. Say “this is my list: one cat, two dog, three elephant” and get a numbered list. What you said stays what you said.
  • Your words. Save “cube her netties” → “Kubernetes” once in the personal dictionary.
  • Files, too. Transcribe audio or video up to an hour, search the library, export TXT, Markdown, SRT or VTT.
  • Stays out of the way. A slim handle opens into a waveform the moment you press the key and snaps to the bottom center, left or right edge.

Trying Dictation Key alongside Wispr Flow

  1. Download Dictation Key and drag it to Applications.
  2. Grant Microphone and Accessibility, verify your email once, and download a speech model.
  3. If Wispr Flow or Apple Dictation also uses Fn, give one app a different shortcut so both don’t react to the same key.
  4. Add names and terms you use often to the personal dictionary.

Wispr Flow also has a free plan, which as of September 2026 includes 2,000 words per week on desktop, per wisprflow.ai/pricing.

Does Wispr Flow work offline?

Wispr Flow’s privacy page states that transcription always happens in the cloud. Dictation Key transcribes on your Mac, so it keeps working without an internet connection after setup.

Does Dictation Key rewrite my text with AI like Wispr Flow?

Partly. On Apple silicon Macs, Smart cleanup uses a small AI model that runs on your Mac to fix punctuation and capitals, follow self-corrections, remove fillers and format lists and emails in English. No. Dictation Key is a Mac app for macOS 14 or later, on Apple silicon and Intel. Wispr Flow lists Mac, Windows, iOS and Android on its pricing page.

Do I need an account to use Dictation Key?

There is no account to transcribe. Setup asks you to verify an email once; product update emails are optional and off unless you opt in.
